Here's a few videos of ukulele rap in action, including our first actual music video for 'guru.' In the future we'll post some highlights from past shows -- some of the classic moments in the history of ukulele hip hop not caught on film. Like that wild cd release show at DC Nine with a full band including Miche, Brendan, Mark, Lisette, Vic, Allison. Or maybe my debut with Jungle Funk's at Coco's off Papaya Farms Road. Or the first time Arthur and Shockwave and me covered 'you got me' by the Roots... In any case, here are a few for you:

'i miss you' solo in the park.
'Guru' Directed by Mark Betancourt, featuring Lisette Braman. Shot in DC in summer 2006, selected for the Foursite Film Festival. We had to wake up before dawn, and turn on the camera and then go back to sleep for the opening sunrise shot. Note: in the scene where we meet in the park with the bowl of cocoa on the rock, and the sun is shining through the space right between us - that really is the sun, it really happened to be right there. The ending scene is shot at IOTA, a really great spot for independent music in the DC area. (Thanks to Mike Maloney open mic host and a great singer/songwriter, for letting us film it. Director Mark Betancourt has gone on to win awards for his short film 'Birds'. Let's hope we can do another video with Mark before he gets too famous...
This is cover... with live acoustic band at the Clown House in Brooklyn. 2009. Band = Ray McNaught on drums, Rose Rutledge Saxophone, Andy Miccolis on bass. Filmed and produced by Gio Gaynor. Erika Kate MacDonald on background vocals from the floor. Hosted by John Leo and Sophie Nimmannit, at the Clown House in Ditmas park. Man that was a fun night. I have to play more in living rooms...
Empire State of Mind @ Joe's Pub: w/ Shockwave and Arthur Lewis
This one has become a youtube sensation in Brazil... maybe we should try to get a gig down there...
'built a raft'
'i miss you'
We played at Drom on March 16th, 2008. I played with with Miche Fambro (guitar/vocals), Rose Rutledge (flute/sax), Greg Walz-Chojnacki (cajon), Stephen Hager (percussion), Ari Folman-Cohen (bass), filmed by Osmany Tellez. It was a grouping which had never played together before - but we had a blast. The sound on the video isn't great, but you can get a glimpse of the pretty sweet organic funk we had going on that night and two new songs in the works for the next album. 'Built a raft' is a true story from when I was about 16, it's taken a few years to be able to tell that one in the light of day...
'Remedy'
This is not a high quality video, but it's a high quality moment. I'm performing the song 'remedy' not long after it was written with my two friends,Ethan Chessin and Cary Clarke about whom the song was written. Ethan's on Euphonium and Cary's on bongos. We played a show in their basement in Portland (packed that place!). I think you may be able someone in the audience suggest the title 'remedy' after I finish. Ethan and Cary and I lived together for four years of college and made a lot of wild music - none of which was ukulele hip hop. Ethan plays just about everything including trombone with a the March Fourth Marching band , a wild psychadelic funky troop of brass, drums, jugglers, stilt walkers and fire eaters that rocks everywhere from Burning Man to half time shows to parading across Europe. Ethan'll probably be the next great American band composer and leader. Ethan can groove with anything from Klezmer to Bach to James Brown, and has the kind of soulful melodic sense that just makes you happy to be alive. Cary plays in At Dusk, a wild beautiful indie rock band that makes polyrhthmic shimmery quilts of songs and give me the goosebumps every time I hear them live. He also puts together the annual PDX Pop festival in Portland, as well as writes a music column for the Portland Mercury. Cary's working to bring independent music to the youth by organizing shows of local musicians in high schools and junior highs and getting local clubs to be open to all ages. You can also hear them both hooting and banging all over the track on the album.
